This project involved the restoration and modernization of the historic 34th District Courthouse in Chalmette, originally constructed in 1939.
The renovation focused on preserving the courthouse’s historic architectural character while integrating modern life-safety systems, accessibility upgrades, and resilient infrastructure improvements required for long-term public use. Structural coordination played a significant role in the addition of new multi-story stair towers, which were designed as independent structural systems to integrate with the existing historic building while accommodating modern code requirements.
Additional upgrades included the integration of hardened emergency power infrastructure, updated building systems, and interior modifications designed to support modern courtroom operations without compromising the historic structure. Careful coordination between new and existing construction was essential throughout the project, particularly within the active and historically significant civic environment.
The completed restoration modernized the courthouse for current operational needs while preserving an important part of St. Bernard Parish’s architectural and civic history.
